Guernsey Counselling Service is a charitable organisation formed in 2004 under its former name Philippi Guernsey.

The name of our new website, www.empathy.org.gg , refers to the non-judgemental understanding and acceptance offered by the service to its clients seeking counselling support.

The charity’s aim is to bring hope to all those in the community who are going through a difficult time, to enable them to appreciate their value as an individual and a person of worth, to take responsibility for their own lives and to reach their full potential. To further this aim, the Charity offers professional counselling services to all, including those who could not afford to go to a private counsellor; it also facilitates accredited training courses for more people in Guernsey to train as professional counsellors. It is currently the only on-Island provider in operation as a route to professional accreditation.

Our Chairman, Gerry Morrissey, says “We are proud of the service that we have built up since 2004 as Philippi Guernsey, but we wanted a fresh brand that would match the inclusivity and professionalism of the service as it has evolved and hopes to build upon in the future. Our goal remains the same, to make professional counselling support accessible to all who need it in Guernsey, whatever their social circumstances or financial means.”

No person requesting counselling will be turned away because they cannot afford to pay. Clients are expected to make a contribution for each session where they are reasonably able to do so, but the amount will depend on their means and ability to pay.

The Charity is currently looking for funding opportunities that will enable it to sustain its offer of affordable counselling and training services to help address gaps in mental health support, as statutory mental health services and third sector providers are finding themselves increasingly overstretched and under-resourced.

Mr Morrissey says “The demand on mental health support services is only going to increase. We hope to continue to expand the availability and professionalism of counselling in the Bailiwick through our training programmes and accessible counselling service.”
